Why I Blog

I started this blog in 2019. When I started, it was a great way to express myself and process my emotions. I had hoped it would help other spellers, but even if no one read it, it was still an amazing outlet for me. At that time, I struggled with a lot of people pleasing. When I would communicate with people directly, I would often say what I thought they might want hear or what would be easiest for them. My blog gave me a way to broadly share my mindset, without worrying about the stress that came from wanting to please someone. It was essentially a journal.

Over time I saw people really enjoyed what I was writing. I got comments from spellers, parents, and even professionals who worked with autistic people. Seeing that I could make a difference really drove me to the idea that it was possible for me to become an advocate. Now that I am able to communicate directly with others more effectively, the primary reason I blog is to help other people. It is a dream of mine to help other autistic people who are similar to me.

  1. Hi Mitchell! I rarely comment on most things online, but wanted to thank you for taking the time to write your blog. I have worked with spellers, and really enjoy hearing your thoughts. I am not autistic, nor is anyone in my family. As you know, educating folks who have not been involved with non-speakers and spellers couldn’t be more important right now! I’ve learned so much from the spellers I’ve known, and from writers like you. Keep up the great work!! People are starting to hear and see the truth!

  2. Mitchell, I am neither a speller, a parent of a speller, nor a professional. I learned about your blog through my daughter, who IS a professional. I can say that you have definitely helped ME. I understand spellers better. I am more patient with those who struggle with communication. And just yesterday I was able to advocate for someone who was struggling. You are doing more great work here than you can even imagine!!!!
