I have been taking college classes for a while now. Like many non-speakers, I started them mainly because I enjoy learning and wanted to continue academics after high school. However, I don’t think college degrees should have to be the end of the road for non-speakers. Many spellers are in the college age-range, yet I don’t see many people talking about how we could possibly be employed.
I know there are many stores that will hire people with disabilities, however I don’t see many options beyond that. If we are capable of earning a degree given accommodations, we should be seen as capable of having a career. A need for support should not be seen as an inability to contribute to society. I wish I had ideas of what can be done to improve this, but unfortunately it’s very complex because both employers and state funding would need to make major changes to support it. I hope one day society will move in this direction for people with disabilities.
