Wearing Headphones

I want people to feel comfortable with wearing headphones whenever they need them. They make it possible to attend loud events. The wedding of Taylor Janisch and Mitchell Janca was really loud with music, but I was able to dance. Without headphones this would not have been possible.

Some people restrict people with autism from wearing headphones. They want autistics to look neurotypical, and we are not. We need hearing protection when we go to very busy places.

Time limits for wearing headphones are why some autistics won’t leave very quiet places. Time limits for headphones are stupid thinking because we really need them to go out. When we are home, time limits really are wrong because they help us accomplish more.

Some parents use headphones to work on looking neurotypical, which is silly. Some parents restrict when their kids can wear headphones and what type of headphones. Looking neurotypical is what they want. Wearing headphones is what I want to be normal and something we should not restrict.

I wore good headphones recently when I attended two social groups in a day.  They helped me a lot. Without good headphones, we would have had to leave.

Good headphones

Goal for 2024:

I want to buy headphones for everyday I go out that look good. When I am home, I will wear light headphones. Really good headphones are beneficial when we are out. Good headphones relax me when we are places where we cannot control sound. I won’t wear them at home unless it is noisy and we cannot control it. When we are used to good headphones, it is hard to switch to light ones. I want to use light ones when we are in low noise places.

  1. What an awesome picture of you at Taylor’s wedding!!!! Thanks for sharing your story. Once I was with an autistic who was wearing headphones. I made the huge mistake of thinking he couldn’t hear me (I have learned a lot since then!) I was asking his mom questions about him right in front of him and really hurt his feelings. I still feel so badly about that. The community has so much to learn and you are doing so much to help us. Thanks for your blog!
