How to Try Something New

Trying new things is challenging for people with autism. While it is a common belief that we are inflexible, for me that’s not the problem. In my opinion, the biggest challenge for trying new things is the motor and sensory demand. I have to face new and unexpected sensory experiences that can be dis-regulating. New motor plans also prove to be challenging in new environments. I have to be “on” all the time to navigate. I have to push my whole body to the limit. It is important to look at the many different aspects of a new situation that can be making an impact. It’s important not to give up just because it is challenging.

I tend to have the most trouble with new places and people. New activities are the least challenging. New people and places are difficult because there are so many more variables to adjust to. People with autism often have some degree of rigidity for many reasons which leads to trouble adjusting to a new way of doing things. It may be tempting to avoid the unfamiliar, but it is important we keep trying until we adjust. I have learned to tolerate many new places and people due to repetition and willingness. It’s important we don’t give up just because it’s hard.

  1. My average day places many sensory and motor demands on me. Days with high sensory and motor demands make me anxious, but I never give up!
