My Story

My story with autism has been different than some others because I also have PANDAS and epilepsy. PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. They cause me to have seizures and difficulty with regulating my behaviors. I am in remission from PANDAS, but it could come back if I get sick. I used to hate everything, but now I am very happy and love life! I think it helped me learn a lot about myself and who I am. It made me pull hair even though I hated doing it, didn’t want to, and I hurt people I loved.

I grew up in Texas and I used to live in Oklahoma. Now I live in Illinois. When I was younger I could talk, but I lost my ability to because I have autism. This is common with autistic people. It took me a long time to learn RPM and it was a lot of work, but it opened up my world. I believe any autistic person who can’t talk would benefit from it. I have learned how to answer questions, tell my needs, express myself, and advocate for myself. I love sharing why I spell to communicate because it is important for people to see how capable we autistics are and it brings me joy to hear other success stories.

  2. Hello Mitchell, I am so delighted to read about your experiences! Thank you so much for sharing with the world. my daughter shares some of your struggles with communication. She turns 15 this month, and we have tried so many things to try to help her connect with others- I’m going to read your blog with her and try to find some information on this system to see if it may help her as well. Keep writing! ~Cj
