My Experience with ABA

ABA stands for Applied Behavioral Analysis. I have been getting ABA services for a few years and have had mixed experiences. I have read bad stories about ABA from other people with autism, but I am here to share my positive experiences. I love my therapists and one in particular has really changed the way I look at life. I have gained more independence from ABA than any other therapy and it has made me hopeful for the future. I see it as you get what you make of it and I choose to make the most of my time with my therapists! How you look at things is what matters most and I just recently learned that from one of my ABA therapists. She comes to work everyday happy even though I know she has a lot going on. I am making progress with my attitude that I didn’t know I could because of ABA!

I believe ABA is seen badly because it is not for communication it is for behavior and people can’t see the difference. I have a lot of goals for ABA that have helped my communication, but my communication had to come in first. I learned RPM first and then I could show my abilities. Then ABA was worth my time. I am proud of how much I have done and I want to go to college! I know I can do it because my behavior will be in control! ABA has let me move my body where my head wants to go and I am proud of myself!

  5. Mitchell,
I love reading about your perspectives and experiences. My son is non verbal as well, and communicates using PECS. He’s only 2 years old, but I hope one day he can develop the communication skills that you have. I don’t know you, but I am so very proud of you. Thank you so much for sharing!

  6. Hi Mitchell, great blog. I sometimes think, if ABA would just be called different, people would spend more time learning about it, understand it better and embrace it. Cheers, Peter
