Parents Traveling

I used to be bothered when one of my parents traveled. It disrupted my routine and the amount of time I had to do fun things. My mom is on a trip right now and I was thinking about how my perspective has changed around their trips. I am now actually very happy they are able to travel when they want to.

There was a long period of time this wasn’t possible. My seizures, medical issues, and regulation challenges made it too difficult and risky. They have made so many sacrifices for my well being and I am glad they have the chance to go now. Parents of disabled children give up a lot more than anyone realizes. They deserve an enjoyable life too.

I am writing this because so many people don’t have communication with their non-speaking children to know they are recognized and appreciated. Just because they don’t speak doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate the daily sacrifices. I think all parents deserve time off of caregiving to travel and relax.

  1. Thank you for sharing. I hope Sawyer feels similarly about staying with his siblings while we parents take a couples vacation.

  2. As a parent to a minimaly verbal autistic teen, reading your posts almost feels like you are giving our child the words they cannot express. I appreciate your openness with your feelings and observations.
