Working with Home Support Staff

I have had a lot of home support workers over the years. I’ve had both amazing and bad experiences. The good far outweighs the bad for me and I attribute a lot of my regulation progress to learning tolerance for all different kinds of people from having support workers at my house. I used to have a lot of trouble with even taking direction from a new person. Now I am able to give people a fair chance.

There was a long period of time that I did not really want to work with my team that came to the house. This was because I was so used to my house being the place I relaxed. I often compartmentalized people and places with specific skills or activities. Having them come, helped me stop compartmentalizing and I learned to generalize more skills, including spelling.

Sometimes there will be staff who are just not a good fit. While this can be discouraging, it’s important that you don’t give up on finding someone good, or get into the mindset that everyone will be bad. Weeding through bad ones is worth it to find people who will support you. I have been lucky to both improve my skills and have great relationships with more people because of having home support.
